Cold-Pressed Juicing Vs Regular

With the juice craze sweeping the world, and juice cleanses and detoxes becoming ever more popular, many people are raising the question: what exactly is the difference between cold-pressed and regular? It’s a good question, and while most people vaguely understand that cold-pressed is better, they aren’t sure why.

The simple answer is that juice’s value derives from the food value it contains inside it. Raw fruits, vegetables and spices contain high levels of enzymes and nutrients. As most of us learned in high school chemistry class, these are complicated molecular structures that unravel when they’re heated. That means they’re no longer available to do the valuable services your body needs them for: aiding in digestion, carrying off free radicals and protecting you from disease.

The studies back this up. For instance, researchers have found that cooking vegetables reduces their value as cancer-fighting ingredients, (1) while garlic also becomes less valuable as a chemopreventative to inhibit or reverse cancer when cooked. (2) Moreover, the active principles in various spices – such as the curcumin in turmeric – break down and are lost when cooked. (3)

Ginger is delicious in so many forms: candied, pickled, added to tea. Its widespread popularity has stood the test of time, earning it an honored place in Ayurvedic medicine as well as current clean eating trends. Whether you chop it up into a stir fry, turn it into a cookie or just eat it on its own, the trusty ginger root isn’t going anywhere any time soon. (Except maybe on our plates and into our juice glasses.)
Chances are, you’ve already noticed that ginger has earned an entirely different reputation in the last decade as well: a powerhouse cancer fighter. New studies demonstrate that compounds present in the root – notably the compound 6-shogaol – may be even more powerful than today’s chemotherapy cocktails.

Juicing has swept the world as a viable means of boosting health, extending life and just plain making mornings more delicious. But many people, in their pursuit of greater health, are working against themselves by making a simple mistake: buying low-quality ingredients.

Buying underripe or wilted produce, buying produce from far away and prioritizing superficial labels over actual nutritional value are all errors in judging the worth of produce. Because plain and simple, some are worth more than others.

For instance, the debate about whether or not organic ingredients actually contain more nutritive value has been raging for decades. Increasingly, research points to yes. A recent meta-study indicates that organically grown crops have fewer residual pesticides and higher concentrations of antioxidants. (1)

That’s not to say all your ingredients need to be organic. In fact, there’s evidence that buying local is a good idea, beyond the obvious environmental benefits. That’s because even if a piece of produce isn’t organic, there’s less time for produce to lose its nutrient value on long trips. Plus, it’s more likely the fruit or veggie will be picked at its peak ripeness and sit in packaging if it comes from a nearby farm. (2) So in many cases, buying conventional but not organic ingredients is a better idea, which is why it's good to buy from a local juice supplier. Even if your ingredients come from further away, this is often worth it if they're grow to peak ripeness and shipped in ideal conditions, so that when they're juiced fresh and maintain all the nutrients and enzymes

Turmeric is the spice world’s current wunderkind. A casual observer might think it was a mythological nectar, said to heal a vast array of diseases, make you smarter and give you the immune system of a god. But with so much promised, what can really be real?

Good question. While a full answer is beyond the scope of this post, let’s take a look at one of the most promising areas of research: the effect of consuming turmeric on your brain.

If you’ve been paying attention to turmeric news these last few months, you’ve likely heard of curcumin. Curcumin is one of the most active and bioavailable compounds in turmeric root, indicated for treating depression, anxiety and dementia. For instance, though the mechanisms aren’t clear, studies increasingly point to turmeric’s role in preventing and reducing the effects of Alzheimer’s. (1)

Another bioactive compound, aromatic turemone (commonly shortened to ar-turmerone), is showing even more promising results. Studies show that ar-turmerone stimulates stem cell proliferation and the formation of new brain cells in rats.
